So!YoON!
This track is the album’s 3rd track ‘Till the sun goes up’. It is the first commentary album that has been with Nahzam Sue’s original song which the track that I reinterpret it to my own style. If you are a big fan of mine and SE SO NEON, you would know the historical SE SO NEON’s first solo performance actually covered ‘Till the sun goes up’. Since it has turned full circle and reached to official release. In this album love line episode has various forms of love. Among the tracks, ‘Till the sun goes up’ has the most intuitive and voluptuous type of love that exists. To keep the pace with it, single short form contents also will be released. I will be joined by Che Yubina, who served as the movement director for the pre-release single 'Bad' music video, and we will have a conversation together. Hello. Please introduce yourself.
Che Yubina
Hello. I am Che.
So!YoON!
What do you do for living?
Che Yubina
I am Korean and Che who usually works on movements.
So!YoON!
I met Che when I visited Berlin to film the music video for SE SO NEON's 'joke!'. Do you remember that we were introduced by our friends who are dancers?
Che Yubina
I tried to recalled it but we only had a day for our schedule.
So!YoON!
The schedule was so tight
Che Yubina
Was it like you were coming and I was going? It was something like this that we only had a day. But at that time in Japanese restaurant which was in Berlin, when I saw someone was coming into the restaurant, saw the cloth and said to myself ‘I am similar to that person. I should have not worn in a pretty dress.’
So!YoON!
Are you trying to make fun of me?
Che Yubina
No. I am not. You really came with comfortable cloth.
So!YoON!
It's a short but essential moment, maybe because we didn't meet in Korea.
Che Yubina
Yes. It was memorable.
So!YoON!
By that time, I had some worries and Che also might have series of worries too. After returning to Korea, it was not often but almost quarterly we have met once without any reason, spill each other’s worries out and through that time made me to feel like being friends. At that time, when I recall it from the stage of complicated thoughts in my mind and met Che, truly after the album was released, even something with the collaboration itself amazed me during the film taking. And also, we are not only friends for just talking.
Che Yubina
Yes. We could have just blabber about it and leave.
So!YoON!
Usually, that is how it is done, but I think I thought we were not the kind of relationship that can blabber. Anyways, As I have been spending time with Che, there is something I made promise to do while thinking about this album. I think I was afraid to do things that I have not tried before. But as of realizing it, I decided to overcome of it. To do so, it was the movement and I was very lucky to meet Che in the midst of that year of thinking. Although I move a lot on stage, I do not think I have ever faced anything about movement. I think Che’s strengths and energy gave me a lot of courage. So, if you have watched ‘Bad’ and ‘Till the sun goes up.’ two videos directed by Che, it is interesting in some ways, and more shocking in the other way. Is this Hwang Soyoon? There are somethings that comes into the mind. Like maybe?
Che Yubina
First of all, related to movement, I met you by not knowing your movements, but when I saw you moving your shoulders like you were excited, ‘She is the one.’ sentence came cross my mind and there are many people who are comfortable with the movements but it is hard to find ‘The one’ these days.
So!YoON!
Thank you.
Che Yubina
So, I thought there would be something I can do after seeing it then. While doing it so, I was able to come up with the idea of some work. Working with an artist is definitely a job for me. I do not know what to call it, but actually In the process of working with an artist, it is important to align with their thoughts or the directions they are pursuing. However, with someone like So!YoON!, I didn't feel the need for that. I can just do things my own way, since this person thinks similar to me.
So!YoON!
Back then, when we joked around and talked about how if Che tells me to rolls, I’ll roll, and if she tells me to barks, I’ll bark too, it was like having that kind of determination or mindset.
Che Yubina
Yes. Absolutely.
So!YoON!
That is right. I do not think we needed a lot of things. Actually, it was my first time getting a movement direct, but it wasn’t so hard that I could not fall asleep at night. Anyways, you have been mainly working as a dancer, but you made a decision to continue doing movement direction, and now we’ve worked on it, I feel like I am seeing Che in a new light. It was something that in the past days, herself used a lot of energy to focus on the movement and even with the simple movement, I thought of myself that she was different from the others. Despite my lack of understanding and only having vague assumptions and feelings, I thought that Che's movements reflected a certain kind of meditation and contemplation, as opposed to just moving to the rhythm of the music. However, after receiving direct guidance and having a conversation for the first time, I realized that Che is a very talented friend. Especially, in terms of focusing on the movements in the artwork, I thought that my focus was mostly on the emotional expressions. But it made me realize that one can focus so intensely on the movements, which was quite surprising to me.
Che Yubina
You are thinking of our practice room, right?
So!YoON!
That's right. It was a long time since I had a chance to focus on my body. I remember a time when I tried to become like a tree and walked as if there were strings attached, and I think I was able to concentrate well too. Although the process of one year was short, going through the process made me feel more liberated on stage.
Che Yubina
I also felt that.
So!YoON!
Did you come to the concert?
Che Yubina
Yes, I did go to the concert. The day I looked exhausted. Always exhausted. So, we whispered to each other, saying, "What is this? Isn't this person quite good? Did I influence it?"
So!YoON!
Whisper, whisper
Che Yubina
That person has broken through their limits.
So!YoON!
That is right. I think Che helped me a lot. The reason I felt that way was because I had a lot of movements before, but I always thought about how I would look. I am enjoying it, but in another way, I thought to myself, won’t it look funny to people? Even though those small thoughts were somewhat frowned upon, after trying it out, it didn't matter anymore. Let's just move as we want, let's try moving in a way that may seem excessive or awkward. I remember performing with that mindset on stage this time, and it's cool to hear how you felt about it.
Che Yubina
I was going to say it, but I may come across as a narcissist. So, yeah, now I'll just keep it to myself and think, ‘Yeah, it's probably because of me. Let's say about 30%.’
So!YoON!
Yes, that's right. It feels like there are things that have opened up or changed a lot for me during our project. So, anyway, we have to talk about ‘Bad’. I'm curious if there are any parts that you thought were important in the 'Bad' music video, because I know you've shown a lot of support.
Che Yubina
It was so much fun. Taejong really did a great job, and he has the same name as my dad. So I had some expectations, and as expected, it was amazing!
So!YoON!
Taejong is absolutely brilliant.
Che Yubina
I used to say brilliant and excellent. But now, I want to show a lot of complicated human relationships based on the structure of human being. In ‘Bad’ music video, there are many relationships. So, when these relationships are combined, I wanted to express entangled complex feelings and jibin, moved so well, and I still remember it vividly. Shower scene, I remember it a lot too.
So!YoON!
Actually, she did not take the shower on the scene.
Che Yubina
I still call it the shower scene. It was a shower. So, it was also fun, and I was satisfied with the music video because it made me feel like I put a lot of effort into the right places.
So!YoON!
I really think it was a necessary card. If Che hadn't been there, a completely different music video might have come out. I remember working with great concentration and getting energized together. Anyway, I didn't even know that we would have a movement director for this album, and also be doing the commentary together.
Che Yubina
That is indeed correct. I also did not know it.
So!YoON!
But I also had the thought that we won't be able to leave this out in the future.
Che Yubina
Don’t edit this.
So!YoON!
Because, you know, these days, not only focusing on music like before, but also paying a lot of attention to visuals and fashion. Going further, how I move and how I appear, it's really important. I had a lot of realizations while working on this project, not only in terms of musical and auditory aspects, but also visually and physically about my own body. I hope to continue creating works that can constantly evolve and awaken. I want to express my sincere gratitude for your support and I also hope that those who listen to Che Yubina's work would pay attention to her. Because, anyway, the artists I collaborate with for this album, or those I continue to collaborate with, are people I truly respect and admire. But they are also almost like my friends. As friends of the same age, I think it's rare to have friends who are so artistic in the aspect of movement. So, I hope she continues to work on good projects and being a good icon in the future. I always have a supportive and respectful heart, and I want to give strength in any way I can.
Che Yubina
Awesome!
So!YoON!
When I always prasie Che, she always stutter herself.
Che Yubina
Yes. That is correct.
So!YoON!
Do you have any things to say?
Che Yubina
I am not really a fan of my own voice, so I don't know how it would sound to others when they listen to it. But it was an honor to be able to participate in the commentary, and even though I may not be able to listen to it, please staytuned.
So!YoON!
Yes. Thank you and good bye.
So!YoON!
The person we are about to meet has made significant contributions with their melodic touch to ‘Till the sun goes up.’ It was challenging to invite him, but let's greet and invite Bassist Hoonch for a conversation. Hello.
Hoonch
Yes. Hello. I am Hoonch.
So!YoON!
Could you simply introduce yourself?
Hoonch
Bassist Hoonch. Too simple.
So!YoON!
Great. One sentence is enough. ‘Till the sun goes up’ was the first track I worked on among the songs in the album. Almost 2 and a half years?
Hoonch
Before that?
So!YoON!
Yes, it was also the track that faced the most difficulties. It's hard to describe, but it didn't feel complete, and I kept working on it, wondering what else could be added to make it better. It was a track that I had a lot of concerns and thoughts about. And then, suddenly, I thought, "Ah, it's the bass!" This is how it is
Hoonch
Ah, is it like the bass should wrap it up?
So!YoON!
I thought that the bass should have an impact, so actually, I knew about Hoonch since long time ago. I've always respected you as a player, so it felt like you were far away, especially since I only saw you on social media. And to my colleagues, you are also like a teacher, someone I deeply admire. So, I wondered how I could connect with you and how it would be interesting to meet in person. That's when I reached out to you first, I believe.
Hoonch
Yes. You left your message.
So!YoON!
At that time, I went to where you were to meet you for the first time, and I had a nervous feeling from my perspective because usually, when I meet with musicians or singer-songwriters, we just casually talk and it's all relaxed. It was the first time for me to express my desire to meet someone like you. So, I was wondering what to do. But initially, it wasn't about making a request or asking for a favor. It was more like, "Can I meet you because I really like your music?". But once we met and started talking, it felt like my expectations were met because your playing style, which I had seen on the screen, was exactly what I expected. It was like meeting someone from the same species as me.
Hoonch
What animal type are you saying?
So!YoON!
I feel somewhat like a foal, and maybe a bit like a wild dog, but I'm not sure if it's a characteristic of a bass player, but it's somewhat eccentric?
Hoonch
Ah, technical term again.
So!YoON!
Perverted, animalistic? But the word 'perverted' doesn't really mean a truly obscene pervert, but rather that feeling you get when you see a sleek car that's really, really fast, like an animal.
Hoonch
Gratitude. Great gratitude.
So!YoON!
Among the performers I have ever seen in Korea, it is the rawest yet the most completed ones. How can I accept this? I was curious about what this is and I wanted to meet you at first. The song ‘Till the sun goes up’ should have much more animal rhythm than I did. That is how it can be completed. It is not synth or computer music, but a person should put it in. I thought that the rhythm would live only when the bass played when a person comes in. It is because the song itself and the rhythm goal itself have my own kind of things. I think it is a song that expresses
that kind of emotion and groove well. Since my body moves, I am a person who really loves this rhythm, so I think I told you after that.
Hoonch
If a strange musician contacts me, ninety nine percent of them comes as clients. Right? So I assumed that she came as a client. But when she actually came, she just talked about some art without mentioning any specific work and left. So I wondered if I made a mistake in my assumption. Did she really come out of curiosity? If so, she must be a very cool and confident person. That's how I thought positively. And then, a few days later, she called me to talk about the work. So I thought, "She is careful and precise. Although I don't know her exact age, she is young but still has such caution. She is a scary person." I thought positively in a good way. And you emailed me with a list of things needed for the work. Looking at that, I drew a lot of pictures. I think you gave me hints like imagining me dancing on stage. I tried searching on YouTube for ‘Hwang Soyoon dance’ but nothing came up.
So!YoON!
I never danced before.
Hoonch
If I had YouTube clips, I would have gotten a clearer hint. Anyways, I think that decisive single context and that one sentence really helped me. That really helps me a lot.
So!YoON!
My favorite part is the bridge part. Even now, it's a part that I love so, so, so much. Thanks to that amazing part, I feel like that part of the song gained a bit of life.
Hoonch
Originally, So!YoON! didn't ask me to do the bridge, and that wasn't the part where the bass needed to be placed. But I said it was the first draft, right. I've been recording, as I continue to record, and when the part comes, I do something. But even if you listen to the music from the beginning, your hand goes into writing. There is something when I write a song, I feel like this has to come out here. I thought that I should make a turning point for the bass, including the harmony and rhythm. So, I tried it and it was fun. But the album came out. And then I listened to this song. And I don't remember how I hit it. I can't think of how I hold the strings. So, if I want to play it again, I have to open the recording files again. I really don't remember. I guess I didn't calculate with my head and just played with my body. I really don't remember. I just dubbed it a few times.
So!YoON!
That is right. When I first heard that part, at first, I thought of you playing the instrument, your posture and your expression and how you might have played?
Hoonch
I also can imagine it.
So!YoON!
Yes, I understand. It seems like a part that those who know Hoonch can probably imagine.
Hoonch
But do you know? When I started using Instagram and took a video, I watched it and my face looked awkward. I couldn't bear to see myself like that. So I tried to look expressionless and quiet, but it didn't work. I gave up because I stil can’t do it.
So!YoON!
It's the same. I feel so awkward seeing myself on camera. So this time, especially when I'm performing "Smoke Sprite" I thought I should try to do it differently from SE SO NEON. Because I use too many facial expressions. "Let's give it a try." So I practiced in front of the mirror and recorded it, trying to remain calm. But when I watched it, it was completely different from what I thought.
Hoonch
It is just me.
So!YoON!
It was so not myself. So I thought, "I can't do it either." and gave up.
Hoonch
I think we need to be born again.
So!YoON!
I think of the bass as the coolest instrument within the band composition. Although I am unable to play it myself, I see it as a percussion instrument in some ways, and as a melodic instrument in others. It serves as a supportive instrument, but also becomes the most important instrument at certain moments. I've been deeply impressed by the attitude and approach towards handling that instrument. I've been curious about the mindset and approach when you are playing the bass.
Hoonch
It seems like there's an answer to everything in what you just said. When I play the bass with this mindset, where I hold it closely to my body, I lose all fear. It's like I become immune to fear, just like someone under hypnosis, not afraid of any stage. And I can become fierce or gentle, depending on the moment. The bass makes me capable of growing in any direction I want. So I play with that in mind. If I want to be truly humble here, I focus on playing the fundamental notes within the chords. When we talk about a good voice, there should be a tone and volume that align with the concept of each song. So I refer to the tone of the bass as "voice" and the volume as "volume" literally, and find the right balance to play as simply as possible. But there are some songs where the bass has to be fierce. In those moments, I truly think of myself as a beast, showing my wild, instinctive side. "Let's roar as loud as we can here." That's why there's a technique called sliding. You slide from the bottom of the string to a higher position, and that's how you get that "woong" sound. There are various ways to express it with slides. Sometimes you can make it sound like a real beast, and when you need it, you can create that kind of effect. When I slide in a ballad, I can do it in a very emotional and sweet way. So in conclusion, I can express anything with the bass. But it's not because I'm good at it, it's because the bass is such a wonderful and beautiful instrument. That's why it seems like that.
So!YoON!
How should I put this? It seems like the bass serves as a type of vessel, similar to a captain and a ship, and depending on how it is played, it allows us to continue moving along different routes. Instruments, in a sense, carry such meaning. Nevertheless, you participated in the performance and provided commentary, how do you feel about it? Do you have any impressions or thoughts?
Hoonch
How do I feel? When are you working on the next song?
So!YoON!
Yes. Right. We need to work on a new project.
Hoonch
First of all, thank you so much. It's a great pleasure and privilege for me to work with a musician like you, whom I have respected for your contributions to good music and participation even before this project. Being chosen for this project feels like an honor. So, even during the preparation for the music, imagining the image you mentioned earlier, I was happy, and now seeing the results turn out well with my sound fitting in nicely in the song, I feel fortunate. Moreover, your album is currently sweeping the charts worldwide, so congratulations on that as well. It's a part that I'm really grateful for, and it makes me very happy.
So!YoON!
I also actually bragged a lot about your bass in my album. "Hooch contributed bass to my album." How honorable is that? I was so happy to be able to capture the performance of such a talented musician in my music. It's something I haven't experienced often, and I am truly grateful for that. While creating the album, I also had the thought that someday I hope I can share it live. That's what I've been thinking.
Hoonch
Then shall we do it here? I would love it.
So!YoON!
I want the audience to listen but I want to see it as a fan.
Hoonch
Great energy might come.
So!YoON!
It would be fun
Hoonch
Won’t it become Serengeti?
So!YoON!
With the hope that someday Hoonch and I will perform this song live
Hoonch
Excited. I will look forward to it.
So!YoON!
I will make sure to remember and show it to everyone who listens. I will now move on to the next track. Thank you.
Hoonch
Thank you.
